I smile when I remember Irene’s devotion to the mother duck and ducklings that hatched on her roof a few years back. She protected them, brought them basins of water and we watched the ducklings learn to swim. We would bike to the Wild Bird Fund for duck food and advice. She cared for them all several times a day until they fell or flew. She told lots of stories about the variety of birds nesting on her rooftop trees — mockingbirds, kestrels and more.
While I do celebrate the wonder of Irene’s life, I am heartbroken.
